PADS-projektet, statusuppdatering 16: vinterrapport från Project Playground!

Samira "missionerar" om PADS

Innan vi lämnade Sydafrika hann vi starta upp ett samarbete mellan PADS-projektet och Projekt Playground som leds av svenska Frida Vesterberg. Organisationen startades av Frida tillsammans med Sofia Hellqvist, numera prinsessan Sofia gift med prins Carl Philip. Project Playground bedriver verksamhet för barn och tonåringar i kåkstäderna Langa och Gugulethu i Cape Town. HÄR och HÄR kan ni läsa tidigare inlägg om uppstarten under maj månad i år.

Nu har vi fått feedback från vår samarbetspartner i form av en statusuppdatering om vad som hänt sedan sist från Thuthu Fuku i verksamhetsledningen :

On the 21 of June 2016 we had a discussion with all the girls who have started menstruating. They were from ages of 12 years and up from the dance, music and netball classes. Nyameka who is our social worker and Hazel who is our community outreach co-ordinator were conducting the discussion. We discussed about menstruation and hygiene. Nyameka focused on the theoretical side while Hazel was on the practical side.
Kids were asked the following questions:
· At what age did they start their periods? (as they differ)
· What are menstrual pains and how they feel like?
· Where were they when they started, how did they feel and who did they tell?
We talked about the womb and different parts of the womb and their responsibilities. What happens during menstruation and pregnancy?

Pads discussion
Why they were created, how to use them, how to keep yourself clean during menstruation and how to keep the pads clean. Girls were happy to hear about the pads, they find them cheaper compared to the disposable pads that cost R20 and more per packet. They even mention the challenge when you're on heavy periods then you need to spend more money to buy two packets which most cannot afford. How embarrassing when they have to use toilet paper or any kind of cloth just to get through the day for school.

The girl’s feedback about pads was very positive. They mentioned how it affects them in not doing activities due to not having sanitary towels. Many kids and parents cannot afford to buy disposable pads monthly. With the evaluation form it is positive feedback, as well from parents and participants. They say the pads are comfortable and easy to wash.

The sales are going well, we have so far sold 27 bags for R10 each.

Härligt med så positiva nyheter, och försäljningen efter en dryg månad är ett bra resultat som vi hoppas ska öka i god takt framöver. Det är också intressant att organisationen gör ett så gediget introduktionsarbete, där man även tar tillfället i akt att prata allmänt om menstruation och hygien. 

Dessa flickor, liksom eleverna på de båda high schools där vi tidigare distribuerat, får som ni ser betala R10 för PADS-kitet som egentligen kostar R220. Det är av stor vikt att flickorna och deras föräldrar upplever att de får göra en liten personlig uppoffring, så de sätter högre värde på PADS-kitet och lär sig att man behöver anstränga sig för det man vill ha. Precis som vi gjort i skolorna gör man också utvärdering i form av skriftliga "evaluation forms" som ni ser ovan, och det är glädjande att även här höra att de tvättbara bindorna och trosorna i PADS-kitet fungerar bra och är lätt att sköta.
