Dear Samira & Bjorn,
Thank you for the enquiry.
It is possible for Swedish nationals to enter SA on a 90 day tourist visa and you are allowed to extend your permit whilst in South Africa this has not changed. The decision to approve or reject an extension lies with Home Affairs depending on the reasons provided for your extension.
You are kindly advised to apply for an extension well in advance within the first 30days and/or on arrival in SA. The system has been digitalized so you can apply online and arrange an appointment with the Visa Facilitation Center which will advise you on which documentation to provide. If you do not get response from Home Affairs before expiry of your 90 days, the Embassy would advise that you leave the Republic as you will fall under the category of undesirable person.
A person who overstays after the expiry of his/her visa, as contemplated in section 30(1)(h) of the Act, may:
a) In the case of a person who overstays for a period not exceeding 30 days, be declared undesirable for a period of 12 months.
b) In the case of a person who overstays for the second time within a period of 24 months, be declared undesirable for a period of two years.;
c) In the case of a person who overstays for more than 30 days, be declared undesirable for a period of five years.
