Please take note of the following important notice on all foreign drivers licence in South Africa.
ALL the Insurers are clamping down big time on invalid driver’s licences !!! If you have not verified that your driver’s licence are definitely valid – YOU MIGHT BE AT RISK!!!
If you have been granted a South African permanent residence, you must convert your foreign drivers licence to a South African one within a year of receiving your permanent residence permit.
- If you fail to convert your licence within one year, it will be regarded as invalid.
- You may also apply to convert your driver’s licence to a South African one if you hold a diplomatic permit but don’t have a permanent residence permit.
- If your licence is not in one of the official languages of South Africa, you must get a letter of translation of the licence by a competent authority.
- Your foreign drivers licence will be converted if the licence:
- is valid
- translated into one of the official South African languages
- is accompanied by a letter of validity obtained from the relevant embassy and a translation if the licence is not in an official language of South Africa
has your photo and signature.

Please make sure that you do comply with the above as your insurer will repudiate your claim should your foreign drivers licence be invalid.

I detta sammanhang vill vi också passa på att påminna om att man behöver ha ett internationellt körkort om man vill köra bil i Sydafrika och bara har ett svenskt körkort. Hyrbilsfirmor och de flesta poliser bryr sig inte nämnvärt MEN om olyckan är framme kan det sydafrikanska bilförsäkringsbolaget komma att neka ersättning om man inte kan uppvisa ett internationellt körkort. Den informationen har vi fått från flera försäkringsmäklare vi varit i kontakt med. Med tanke på att all text enbart är på svenska på det svenska körkortet är detta kanske inte så konstigt.
